Sweden : Two PhD positions in Biosensors based on nanostructures
Uppsala University hereby declares the following position to be open for application:
Two PhD positions in Biosensors based on nanostructures (nanowires, nanotubes and graphene)
in the subject Engineering Sciences with specialization in Electronics at the Ångström Laboratory, Department of Engineering Sciences, Division of Solid State Electronics. Starting date as soon as possible.
The announced positions will be financially sponsored by a donation by Knut & Alice Wallenberg (KAW) Foundation. The research aims at using nanostructures including silicon nanowires, carbon nanotubes and graphene as the interface for ultrasensitive electrical detection of circulating tumour cells (CTC) in blood samples. The research will be conducted in close collaboration with scientists and engineers in physics, biochemistry and medicine under the umbrella of a newly granted KAW project “Droplet microfluidics and functionalised nanowires for detection of circulating tumour cells” among scientists from Uppsala University, Royal Institute of Technology, Karolinska Institutet and ACREO.
Project description: The research activities of the PhD candidates filling the announced openings will be centred around design, fabrication and characterisation of field-effect and electrochemical biosensors based on the aforementioned nanostructures. Device fabrication, materials analysis and electrical characterisation will be carried out using Ångström clean-room facilities as well as the state-of-the-art electrical characterisation laboratory of the Division of Solid-State Electronics. A major challenge for you is to master the essence of the biochemical processes, as well as their consequences, occurring at the interface between biomolecules (DNA, etc.) and the nanostructures.
Qualifications expected: Successful candidates should have a master of science in physics, chemistry, materials science, electrical engineering or equivalent. Curiosity and ambition in learning and solving cross-disciplinary issues is a necessity for success. Strong collaboration spirit and good communication skills in oral and written English are especially required in the multidisciplinary environment set up for the project.
A PhD education is normally for four years, extendable to a maximum of five years including departmental duties at a level of at most 20% (typically teaching). Further information: http://www.teknat.uu.se and http://www.teknik.uu.se.
Applications should include a brief description of research interest and past experience, a CV, copies of exams, transcripts, degrees and grades, a copy of your Master thesis (or a draft thereof) and other relevant documents. The candidates are encouraged to provide letter(s) of recommendation and contact information to reference persons.
Local salary rules will apply.
The rules governing this process can be found (in Swedish) in Högskoleförordningen 5 Chapter 1-7 §§ and in University rules http://regler.uu.se/.
