Ireland : Post Doctoral Researcher in Modelling And Control Of Aggregated Smart-Load Dynamics

As a partner in the Science Foundation Ireland funded Strategic Research Cluster in Sustainable Electrical Energy Systems (http://erc.ucd.ie/sees/), the Dynamics and Control Research Group at NUI Maynooth is seeking to hire a Postdoctoral Researcher to undertake research on modelling and control of aggregated smart-load dynamics.

Developments in smart metering technologies and home area networks point to a future where household energy consumption can be influenced remotely to achieve load reduction during peak demand periods or when the local network is stressed, and to provide fast reserve response to system emergency conditions.

Design of a centralised supervisory control scheme for these 'smart loads' is very challenging as it must recognise various issues, including the impact of communication and actuation delays, a time-varying load response, and the potential for local instability and limit cycles arising from interaction with a smart meter based multi-agent system.

Alternatively, distributed local control, based on smart loads, could play a major role in enhancing system performance and stability, operating independently of, or in collaboration with, a centralised structure. Exploring these issues is the primary focus of this research project.
