Germany : PhD Programme-International Max Planck Research School on Earth System Modelling
The International Max Planck Research School on Earth System Modelling (IMPRS-ESM) and the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology (MPI-M), departments ‘The Atmosphere in the Earth System’ (AES) and ‘The Ocean in the Earth System’ (OES), invite applications for 4 PhD positions.
Possible research topics are available in the areas:
(1) Modeling of convective processes (AES)
(2) Climate dynamics of precipitation zones (AES)
(3) Climate dynamics of a coupled ocean-atmosphere aqua planet (OES)
(4) Numerical error estimation in the new model ICON-ocean (OES)
(5) Mechanisms of ocean heat in a warming world (OES)
(6) Large-Eddy simulations in ocean modelling (OES)
Successful candidates will join the IMPRS-ESM. We are looking for outstanding students interested in interdisciplinary climate research. Our doctoral candidates contribute to the understanding of the Earth system through the application, evaluation and development of a spectrum of Earth system models at different levels of complexity and at various spatial and temporal scales. While emphasizing the physical system, the School encompasses the broader field of Earth sciences, including economics and social sciences. The IMPRS-ESM strives to attract a diversity of talented men and women from all nationalities to research in the Earth system sciences.
The PhD program is open to applicants holding a German Diplom degree or the equivalent (e.g., Master’s degree with written thesis) in physics, geophysical sciences (incl. meteorology and oceanography), mathematics, computer science, or engineering.
To apply, please register online and then submit all requested application documents via e-mail. Online registration closes February 26, 2012. Application deadline is February 29, 2012. The selection procedure includes an interview in April 2012. Doctoral students receive financial support of about 1,350 Euros/month for a period of 3 years.
