Germany : PhD position in Neurobiology

A position for a doctoral student at the University of Leipzig, Department of General Zoology and Neurobiology (Prof. Rudolf Rübsamen) is available in the project
The role of early postnatal activity in development of physiological properties of neurons and of nuclear organization in the auditory brainstem
The project is funded for three years by a DFG Research Grant. Application deadline: 01-May-2012.
The main focus of the project is to investigate the contribution of neuronal activity to development of functional neuronal circuits in the central auditory system. There is increasing evidence that spontaneous activity during early postnatal period is of general importance for establishment of orderly connections in the CNS. The work includes whole-cell recordings in acute brain slice preparations, imaging technique and morphological analysis. Genetically modified mice models will be used to appraise the influence of different patterns of neuronal activity. To assess the functional relevance, the experiments will be tightly embedded in a work of a post-doc who is engaged in the project and performing in vivo recordings.

The Department of General Zoology and Neurobiology (www.uni-leipzig.de/~neuro), located at the Faculty of Biosciences, Pharmacy and Psychology, is embedded in a strong neuroscience research community at the University of Leipzig (www.zv.uni-leipzig.de/forschung/pbf/gehirn-kognition-und-sprache.html). Working facilities are excellent, and PhD students will be affiliated with the DFG Research Training Group InterNeuro (www.uni-leipzig.de/~ineuro/).

The University of Leipzig is an equal opportunity employer encouraging female scientists and scientists with disabilities to apply.

Please send application papers only in copy without folder or by e-mail. They will be destroyed after a retention period.
