Doctoral Research in Astroparticle Physics at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, Germany

Two Doctoral Research in Astroparticle Physics for Male/female at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, Germany 2012

Study Subject(s):Astroparticle Physics
Course Level:Doctoral Research
Scholarship Provider: KIT
Scholarship can be taken at: Germany

Eligibility:
Candidates should hold a qualifying degree in physics and should have a specialization in astroparticle physics or a related field. Software skills (C++, Linux) and experience in statistical methods would be assets when analysing the measurements of the Tunka radio extension. The candidates will present and discuss their results at international conferences and workshops as well as significantly contribute in publishing the results. Since the candidates have to perform experimental work at the Tunka site, skills in Russian language and culture are of advantage.

Scholarship Open for International Students: No

Scholarship Description: The new Helmholtz-Russia Joint Research Group (HRJRG) “Measurements of Gamma Rays and Charged Cosmic Rays in the Tunka-Valley in Siberia by Innovative New Technologies” aims at high-energy gamma-ray astronomy and cosmic ray astrophysics. The projected air-shower detectors will be based on the air Cherenkov technique and the radio detection technique (tunka-hrjrg.desy.de). In the frame of this HRJRG, KIT announces the availability of two positions for qualified PhD students devoted to the radio extension, at the Tunka experiment close to lake Baikal. The combined Cherenkov light and radio measurements of the same cosmic ray air showers will significantly improve the measurement technique and knowledge of air showers. This will help to solve the unknown origin of the highest energy particles ever measured.

How to Apply: Online
